Dumbledore’s Diary: Forget Me Not

Last weekend, I met Dumbledore, a sweet, affectionate good boy who craves attention and is an avid cuddler, for a fun-filled photo session.

After all of the dogs had their pictures taken, I went to see Dumbledore and Sam in their kennels. As I listened to Sam sing his heart out, soulfully howling, I noticed some of the other dogs were joining in. I looked over into Dumbledore’s kennel and there he was, making noises, as if trying to be a part of the pack.

Dumbledore doesn’t need to write down his thoughts, he can express them with his mesmerizing eyes. And, picturing the scene in his kennel, I imagine this is what his eyes would say tonight:

Dear Diary:

Tomorrow is Tuesday. To many, that’s just another day. To me, it’s a new chance, and it fills me with hope. The shelter opens tomorrow after having been closed for two days, and that means I get another chance at finding my forever home. I want to have a forever home so badly, it’s all I can think about tonight.

Sam, my kennel neighbor, whispers softly, “You’re not alone; we’re in this together,” and he howls encouragingly, “Someone will come for us, someone will save us.” Oh, how I hope he’s right.

I’m glad Sam is close by. He gets me and the other dogs through the tougher days and the lonely nights. He looks out for us and comforts us. It’s silly, but I kind of feel especially connected to him because we both have two different-colored eyes and we like to sing together.

You may already know this, but I came into the shelter as a stray. And I am so very thankful for having a bed, food, and water, but I dream of the day someone will come to my kennel and say, “Dumbledore–he’s gonna be my dog.”

I imagine sitting by the window at my new home, looking up at the stars, thinking, “Life is grand.” And I dream of lying on the couch, maybe snoring a little, or cuddled up next to my human, getting an ear massage and giving kisses in return. I wish for my family to wake up in the mornings happy to see me, happy I’m in their, our, home. I hope for someone whose world I can make whole just by being me.

I hope and I wish and I imagine and I dream. Day in, day out. I hope and I wish and I beg and I plead: Forget me not. Forget us not.

Ever hopeful,
Dumbledore
